Peter Frankopan: The warnings from MI6, the armed forces and the Royal Navy are not alarmist. They are attempts to prepare the public for a world in which disruption is normal, resilience is a strategic necessity and deterrence depends as much on political cohesion and credibility as it does on military hardware.
Trump may be right that Europe must do more for its own defence. But by weakening confidence in the alliance that has underpinned European security for decades, his approach has significantly raised the level of danger.
For adversaries watching closely, that combination – higher European vulnerability and American ambiguity – is not a reason for restraint. It is an invitation to test how far they can go.
That looks like an own goal in the making…
