The Biden administration has privately asked Ukraine to show an openness to negotiate with Russia, according to the Washington Post.
This request is not aimed at pushing Ukraine to actually negotiate with Russia.
According to people familiar with the discussions, it is, rather, a calculated attempt to maintain international support for Kyiv as countries face growing popular discontent in having to bear the costs of a war that could last for many years to come.
US officials said that that President Volodymyr Zelensky’s blank refusal to talk with Putin has not gone down well in parts of Europe, Africa and Latin America, where the war has aggravated the cost of living crisis, affecting the availability and cost of food and fuel.
“Ukraine fatigue is a real thing for some of our partners,” said one U.S. official who spoke on the condition of anonymity.
