How KGB detected spies

Filip Kovacevic: The document described no less than five types of indicators of the potential espionage involvement as perceived by the KGB.

The first type was derived from the circumstances of the given individual’s departure from their home country. The KGB claimed that one of the signs that the foreign visitor was likely a spy was having his or her trip subsidized by the “philanthropic foundations” known to finance anti-Soviet activities. The person might also be a spy if his or her financial status in the home country did not match the amount of spending in the Soviet Union.
