Axel Springer’s Politico received $8 million in subscription contracts from the US government

“I can confirm that the more than $8 million taxpayer dollars that have gone to essentially subsidizing subscriptions to Politico on the American taxpayers’ dime will no longer be happening,” White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said Wednesday.

“The DOGE team is working on canceling those payments now,” she said.

Worth knowing: German press baron Axel Springer is reportedly friends with billionaire Elon Musk. He is alleged to have masterminded the publication of an opinion piece by Elon Musk in Die Welt last year, where the billionaire expressed his support for the far-right AfD in the upcoming German federal elections on 23 February 2025. Springer, who owns Die Welt and Bild and is known to be a libertarian, has previously said he admires Musk. How will the cancellation of USAID’s subscriptions with Springer’s Politico affect his relationship with Musk? Watch out.
