Carney’s minority government: Good or bad news for freedom?

The Canadian Constitution Foundation challenged the Trudeau Liberal government’s use of the Emergencies Act against the convoy protests and won. Federal Court Justice Richard Mosley ruled that the invocation of the Emergencies Act was unreasonable and infringed on protesters’ Charter rights.

At the height of the convoy protests against COVID-19 restrictions and mandates in early 2022, Mark Carney, then a close advisor to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, wrote an opinion piece brandishing the demonstrations as “sedition” and urging the Trudeau government to “follow the money” to punish “anyone sending money to the convoy”.

With Mark Carney now elected Prime Minister, what lies ahead for the core freedoms of Canadians under a fourth consecutive Liberal minority government? Christine Van Geyn, the litigation director of the CCP, gives her thoughts on the 2025 election results and what to watch out for.
