Toronto Star: Quebec’s referendums on sovereignty in 1980 and 1995, as well as the initial election of the separatist Parti Québécois led to major companies and thousands of people leaving the province.
Reuven Brenner, a retired McGill University professor who studied the economic impact of Quebec’s attempts at separation, points out that the province lost businesses and people who could work or operate anywhere.
“Montreal was Canada’s financial centre before the PQ came to power. The centre moved to Toronto as the finance professionals moved there,” he said. “Montreal never recovered to be a financial hub.”…
