Macron’s defence spending plan drives open political divisions in France

President Macron proposed to raise defence spending from 2 % of the country’s GDP to up to 3.5%, a hike that would require an additional €30bn annually. But such a drastic increase would be a major challenge given the state of France’s strained public finances, and political divisions mean the chances of finding consensus on this are increasingly slim.
