Robin Sears: Trump may soon start to look weak. Will that prompt Mark Carney to make early election call?

Robin Sears/Toronto Star: It seems likely that Trump is likely once more to meddle in a Canadian election, perhaps going so far as to endorse Pierre Poilievre, who will then himself be trapped between the many Trumpians in his base and the demands of the less bamboozled Canadian voter. Trump’s desperation will likely mount by late spring or early fall, when it will become clear he will lose the midterm Congressional elections.

Following such a defeat he will truly be a lame duck, having lost at least one of both houses of Congress. But a Trump who has been mortally wounded would be far less useful to the Liberals as boogeyman. That’s why, despite all the public disclaimers, Carney will be assessing 2026 election dates with increasing urgency…
